Designer Profile:
Fold.
Key People:
Rachel Young
Location:
Auckland New Zealand
Bio/Company History:
Bachelor of Design majoring in 3 Dimensional Object. My designs are inspired by origami, the art of folding paper. I first became interested when I was taught how to fold paper birds as a child. Since then, the process of transformation from two dimensions to three has always fascinated me. It was only until the final year of my design degree in 2002 that I rediscovered my interest in origami. I am still investigating the potential folding has when combined with the functionality of everyday objects since my graduation and the setup of Fold in 2003.
What drives you:
The design process and overcoming a challenge. I love a challenge and that’s where my problem begins. I am addicted to the drama that is designing something from scratch and bringing it through to its final form. The highs, the lows, mental breakdowns and self doubt… all seem to be indicators that you’re on the right track to a great object. Probably not good for my mental health.
What inspires you:
Origami and design. Both started as a childhood interest. Design, I’ve always had an interest in. But origami over the past 5 years has become almost an obsession. Plus everyday surroundings, you just never know what is going to spark an idea.
Recent Media:
NZ Life and Leisure magazine, Your Home and Garden magazine. A few more in the near future.
What are you doing when you don’t do this?
