Designer Profile:
Makeshift Magazine
Key People:
Eddie Dawn-McCurdy, Jessica George, Zena Kitson, Steven Lyons.
Location:
Auckland, New Zealand.
Bio/Company History:
Makeshift is a collaborative group of artists and designers who aim to promote the local arts in a way that is both inclusive and fun. The collaborative started in 2006 and has since been finding new and different ways of bringing people together to celebrate art and music within New Zealand.
What drives you:
The thrill of the new, the joy of seeing something you didn't know existed but now that you do you desperately want to interact with it. Probably most important is helping artists get their work out into the world and getting people excited about creating.
Inspiration:
Eddie: Eleanor Rigby. Why not?
Jess: Bright colours, music, street art, dynamic people who break the routine & have a good time with life.
Zena: The creativeness and drive of the people around me, seeing them doing their thing gets me fired up about my own work.
Steven: Music, life, change, movement and everything in between.
What are you doing when you don’t do this?
Within our group we run the entire gamut from proper salary work for a large company to broke, starving artist. Both sides have their upsides and downsides.
Black or White?
Eddie: Mid-tone gray?
Steven: Can one exist without the other?
Meat or Vege?
Vege, by and large.
If you could spend a day with anyone, who would it be and why?
We're pretty happy with who's around, and there's always someone new to meet. Eddie says, ‘If you can't make a good time with the people you have then a dead celebrity isn't going to help’.
Best day in your life so far? Why?
Each new day is looking to top the last.
Mac or PC?
Mac, no question.
Married/Single Kids/Pets?
That awkward in-between stage where you're technically a grown-up but you're still too immature to act like one or perform any of their roles.
Describe yourself in 5 words:
Purveying change in your hood.
