Catalina is an Auckland based designer who is in her 3rd yr of a Bachelor of Art and Design at Auckland University of Auckland. She decided to start up a company in February 2007 after she designed a name necklace for herself in a Pacman styled font. After great response to the necklace she released some limited edition necklaces through endemic.
What drives you?
CATALINA is committed to original design, wanting it’s customers to own unique jewellery which is quirky and fun. CATALINA does not want all their customers to look the same so each design is limited edition. To keep the brand fresh CATALINA releases new designs as often as she feels instead of seasonal collections.
Inspiration:
Anything and everything can inspire me. Ideas usually come to me while walking to the bus stop, driving to work or people watching. I like to take thing’s out of context or put every day objects into juxtaposing positions. Really I like doing things for the hell of it. Being young, love of fashion, art and life.
What are you doing when you don’t do this?
When I’m not designing necklaces I am designing clothes, watching the living channel, going for coffee or cooking at home. I am currently in fashion purgatory - no longer a student but not yet established in the design whelm! Watch this space.
Black or White?
Both are key colours in my necklaces! Both mean such different things and can change the context of the item that it really is too hard to choose.
Meat or Vege?
Love eating meat but vege is also important for a balanced diet.
If you could spend a day with anyone, who would it be and why?
I would love to have been around The Factory with Andy Warhol and pick his brain about his more unknown pieces such as his movies and fashion lines. But since he is dead, I would really love to meet some of the worlds great designers and fashion editors such as Marc Jacobs or Anna Wintour… but if I just wanted a really wicked crazy time it would definitely have to be CSS.
Best day in your life so far? Why?
I don’t like to live in the past, everyday is a new day and you never know what opportunities are out there. A great day can be created or destroyed in one moment.
